Happy Birthday to my soldier, my husband, my friend

Another year has passed for you, its time to cut the cake,

And its also time to think of ALL the reasons we are here to celebrate.

Not just because it’s your birthday, although it is a special day,

But also because you’ve come so far and still steadily on your way…

To not only being a ‘stand-up’ guy who many would agree,

But also in continuing the fight, between duty and your love for me.

How do I begin to tell you how honored I am as your wife,

And the pride I hold with in my heart living this military life.

We’ve had so many hard times of which we’ve conquered them all,

From Korea to Alaska, even through deployment we still stand tall.

And today I can’t help but remember, for it was just 1 year ago,

I had to say goodbye to you on your birthday, unlike any other time I’ve known.

I’ve learned to make them short and sweet and send you on your way,

But this time…. things went a little bit differently that day.

Not many understand the feeling – only the strong are allowed to know,

How it feels to leave the ones you love – heartbreak sets in and grows.

I only had you for a couple of weeks and though it made me sad,

we enjoyed them to the fullest remember? Like the honeymoon we never had.

But I said goodbye, held my head high, as you slowly went out of sight,

And me w/the boys we prayed for you, before going to bed that night.

You had some really hard times, scary and sleepless nights,

 I think our prayers kept you safe and strong to keep on fighting the fight.

I guess that what I’m trying to say is that in good times or times of sorrow,

I’m glad that you are here today and for all the future tomorrows.

Today I couldn’t spoil you – take you to dinner or to the mall,

But I wrote you a sweet little poem – and it’s the first, as I recall.

As my heart is overflowing with love, joy and happiness – to name a few,

I am so happy you are here, so I can say “Happy Birthday, to you” ♥
