I remember when I first met you,
On a laid back night in 1997,
I asked my mother,
Who is that pretty lady,
Singing on the t.v,
And she told me your name,
If I was old enough for a crush,
I would have had one,

Happy Valentines day Whitney Houston,
I wrote this for you first thing in the morning,
On this day that inspires love,
I’m a poet now,
And love is one of a poet’s central themes,
One you helped inspire,

I remember when I was a child,
That hated to do chores,
Having to get scolded by my mom,
To lift a finger before jumping up,
And going outside,
But your voice in the stereo,
Turned chore’s boredom,
Into peaceful Saturday mornings,
Making it easier for a mother,
To tame a son,

I remember the heartbreak hotel,
You opened up,
For hurting women to cry,
And have a safe place to reside,
In there mind as your music,
Drowned out men’s lies,
That wouldn’t stop replaying,
I was a young child then,
But I knew what was going on,
In women’s hearts,
Even my mother,
All I wanted to do,
Was reach out and say,
That’s not right,
But it’s okay,
Mom you’re going to make it anyway

Whitney we all know,
That there were problems,
But I don’t care what anybody says,
Your voice was anointed,
And I’m writing this to say,
Thank God for Whitney,
Rest in peace,
You are loved and missed,
And will always be remembered
