Although it is short in length, I’ve been working on this poem since February of 2007. I started writing it in a class I took at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, that was taught by the infamous Irish poet, Greg Delanty, and was entitled “Poetry Writing Workshop I”. Greg gave me a lot of positive feedback on this particular poem. Furthermore, this poem highlights the use of alliteration and assonance. Lastly, I wrote this poem because I am from the Boston area and have been working in Harvard Square for the past ten summers of my life.

Couples holding hands
crossing crosswalks, as subway lovers
reluctantly rise to the world. They open their eyes
and become pained and peripatetic all over again.

C’est Bon on the corner of Washington,
a small store serving the usual French Francaphone
that has stopped by for the past 44 years.
Shelves of smokes, cigars and cigarettes, the Lotto,
the Globe, and rolls of endless scratch tickets.

On JFK, a Statey in navy stops at his favorite 7-11
to get a cup of coffee while taxi’s sit vacant on the curb.
A vendor pulls up, always on time, for he has a family of five to feed.

He pulls his dolly full of cookies past
pedestrians of nameless faces, all rushing at a different pace.
Then, without delay, he dashes into
his store’s front door to deliver his
Soft Baked Sausilito, Santa Cruz, and Double Chocolate Chunk.

Very orginal. I especially enjoy your unique use of alliteration and assonance. Well done.
