A poem about acceptance when the end comes.

He sees Himself looking deeply into an ornate mirror,

Counting the flames of the souls who still linger,

A match cracks as he watches the soul burn out,

Deep in the confining mirror smoke slithers about,

A sigh from the glass leaves a trail of vapour mist,

Lips from a phantom summons a frozen dead kiss,

“Stop!” He cried, “Please no more!”

His eyes reflect what has been before,

“Demon of the mirror oh demon of death,

I ask that you leave me and take your cold breath.”

Laughter rises in the halls unseen,

Cruelty unimagined as such even from a dream,

Claws reach out and grasp to hold him against his will,

Out comes the monster as it screams out so shrill,

“You look in me every day and every night,

I watch your face wretch in horror at my very sight.

Behold again mortal and see all your kin,

See the sorrow peeling at your skin!”

And as the creature taunted and tore,

He feels his blood run cold and trickle to the floor,

He feels his tears well up like the dew on trees,

The spirits of the past thrust him onto his knees,

“My family! My friends! Oh what have I done?

Why am I to be the only one?

The last of my clan is this such a shame?

I feel not worthy to carry on this name.”

And so the creature pulled him in past the void,

The mirror like water a field day for Freud,

The demon asked, “Are you ready for the end?”

He smiled, then laughed, “There is none my friend…”

What passes the mirror passed the veil,

What passes the test shall set sail,

What can be seen can be treasured,

What death takes cannot be measured,

He passed through with a smile and not a grin,

He forgave himself for his own little sin,

For any being who has lost others in life,

Has to face the coming strife,

The man accepted and so he could go,

To the beings that he did know…
