I had a cold that made me go deaf.

It’s freezing outside, there a frost on the ground
There’s ice on the windows and I can’t hear a sound
My ears are all blocked since my cold went away
And I can’t hear any of the things people say.
My hubby’s complaining that the telly’s too loud,
I don’t listen to him “cause my head”s in a cloud.
I must get them cleared if I’m going to move on
I can’t do much till my deafness has gone.
I filled them with drops in the hope they would clear
But even deafer I got and I just couldn’t hear.
Oh what could I do to resolve this affliction.
If I continued with drops I might get an addiction.
There was no doubt in my mind that advice I should seek,
My condition I was sure was not all that unique.
The doctor took a look and the blockage was complete
Syringing was the only treatment the condition to beat.
Now two days later with the remedy carried out
I keep telling my hubby he doesn’t need to shout.
I can hear so well it has cheered me no end
But If I don’t want to hear I can always pretend.

Excellent poem, Christine! Especially that last line! Lol.
Because I’ve been deaf in my right ear since childhood, my left ear is very important to me! Last February I came down with a head cold which plugged my left ear’s eustacian tube, causing temporary deafness. Since the doctors said there was nothing we could do except wait it out, my husband went and bought me one of those little battery-operated devices that you clip to your clothing! Even though the sound was a little tinny, the ear buds definitely helped until my hearing returned! Ha ha.

  • Christine Ramsay on Dec 29, 2008

Oh poor you, Muriel! Its not nice being deaf is it? At least mine was temporary, though I do only have sight in one eye so we make a good pair don’t we?

    Love Christine

I love the way this is written…Throughout the beginning it was making me feel really bad but the way you ended it made me smile. While I am sure that it is awful to not hear, you ended the story with an up side and that’s great…

  • Mark Ramsay on Dec 30, 2008

I remeber this. You were so funny. dad kept telling you off for having the television so loud. lol

  • Ruby Hawk on Dec 31, 2008

That is a neat poem. I have had colds that blocked up my ears so I know how you felt. You really put it together well.

  • Marion Brady on Jan 8, 2009

This is quite a common affliction. I am so glad you got your ears cleared. I like the ending

  • trishia on Feb 9, 2009

This is great writing Christine. It’s timely, well presented with a humor that’s got me laughing again. Thanks,I needed that! Mind you,I’m not laughing because of the deafness-but it’s funny how your husband still shouted.
