"Holy Spear" is a poem about the legendary Holy Lance or Holy Spear used by Longinus, the roman soldier who pierced Jesus in his side with a lance while he was on the cross. Longinus’ legend grew over the years to the point that he was said to have converted to Christianity after piercing Christ.

When Israel selected Saul as king
This spear was offered as a gift to him
Oh, the way he used it, so terrible and grim

He hurled the spear three times and one time [8, 9]
Trying to hit the next king during song and rhyme [8]
Including his own son for questioning him [9]

[8] 1 Samuel 16: 1, 2, 13; 1 Samuel 18: 10-12; 1 Samuel 19: 9-10

[9] 1 Samuel 20: 32, 33

The next king and the questioning son escaped so quickly
Once when Saul fell asleep his spear was taken, so simply [10]
Lost and considered by Saul so valuable and dear

[10] 1 Samuel 26: 1-16

They returned it to him only after he quit
Hurling it to them as he simply saw fit [11]
How true and great the legend of this spear

[11] 1 Samuel 26: 14, 17-25

When Saul went to battle one more time
His last battle like his life was not worthy of a rhyme
What’s more, it was his last, for then he lost his life [12]

[12] 1 Samuel 31: 1-10

Saul, the dark and terrible king was no more
Still, the legend of the spear kept growing more and more
A spear built to be drowned in blood and take life

Warriors of the next king found the great spear
Forgotten in the quiet battlefield, quiet and still here
Next to King Saul’s great circular shield

And two of the mighty men of the next king
Brandishing this spear accomplished a great thing
Defeating hundreds at once in the battlefield [13]

[13] 2 Samuel 23: 8–18

The legend of this spear is a frightful one
And of all the warriors who held this spear, time has spared none
For it is well known that the warriors who once held it are no more

When Israel broke God’s Holy commandments
They lost great battles and their conquering enhancements
And they were conquered instead for their dark spiritual flaw

Now lost and in the hands of a different king
The spear inspired incredible warriors a battle song to sing
Taking the life of thousands and thousands

Conquering kingdoms and bathing in blood
It made thousands and thousands fall in the mud
And travelling quickly from hand to hand it met many lands

When Longinus, an incredibly powerful soldier [?]
Saw the spear while in the battlefield, he quickly got closer
And he took it from his enemy making him yield

The legend of this dark and terrible spear
Making men still tremble and fear
Only to a selected few is still revealed

Bathed in blood thousands of times
Built to battle, and still inspiring songs and rhymes
It would be bathing in blood still once more

Piercing the side of the true Holy Christ [15]
In the torture stake there sacrificed
The legend of the Holy spear would grow more and more

[15] John 19: 31-3

Built for battles and moments of war
The Holy spear will bring death to us no more
While wounding the Christ it was made Holy saving the lost and the poor

What happened to it no one knows
Its terrible legend keeps echoing and it still grows
Could it really give eternal life to one who holds it or it throws?

[?] Longinus is the name given in medieval and some modern Christian traditions to the Roman soldier who pierced Jesus in his side with a lance while he was on the cross. The figure is unnamed in the Gospels. The Longinus legend further identifies this soldier as the centurion present at the cruxifiction, who testified, “In truth this man was son of God.” Matthew 23: 54 Longinus’ legend grew over the years to the point that he was said to have converted to Christianity after piercing the Holy Christ.
