A poem about the heroes in our everyday lives.

Hometown Heroes

A thousand miles away
He looks up to pray.
He steadies his hand
He’s defending our land.

Just down the road
Carrying a load.
The ambulance carries the hurt.
He has to remain alert.

There are stains on his shirt.
From digging in the dirt.
He looks from the top.
At his growing crop.

In the class she will stand.
There are minds to expand.
To teach and to nurture.
The leaders of the future.

Blue lights flash .
Criminals dash.
The cops lets out a sigh.
And just wonders why.

They are just like you and me.
They have a job and duty.
They do their job and don’t complain.
Even when their strength starts to wane.

A drought, a flood, a shot fired.
That’s why they are hired
They all do their best
To give us some easy rest

Little praise
Long days
Under compensated
Not appreciated

The thanks they get
For a task well met
Is never enough
It makes life tough
