On a recent visit to my son I was amazed to see how his newly aquired aquariun brought so much peace and calm into his life.

All pictures by author

When the day’s drained his strength

And he needs complete peace

Away from the rat race and stress,

There is nothing too worrying

Or praying on his mind

That an aquarium of fish can’t suppress.

In gold, black and white

They glide along with such grace

In a motion smooth and serene.

And the calming sound of bubbles

Disperse all his woes

As they rise up through the weed so green.

The fantails and minnows

Move swiftly along

Then suddenly dive into the wrack,

Chasing blackmores and newts

And a big wiggly eel

As if they were on the attack.

A sucker loach appears

Then lunges with such strength

To catch algae that clings to the glass.

Shrimps cringe behind stones

In an effort to hide

From hungry predators as they pass.

As he lies wearily on the rug

After his day’s hard toil

He gazes at the beauty within.

He soon laughs and chats

With these greatest of pets

And the stresses of his day soon dim.

Nice one. I would enjoy mine, but I have one of those gigantic old glass ones. So cleaning it is quite the challenge.Good job though.

Lovely poem, Christine. I like the descriptions and also the way lines flow along, a bit like the fish swimming, really.

Good poem. At least you son has bought a large tank. I always feel there is something sad about a single goldfish endlessly circling round a tiny glass bowl.

  • deep blue on Feb 16, 2010

Well expressed, Christine. Your son had a small world to retreat for comfort. Aquariums are nice hobbies indeed.

A very peaceful, relaxing poem. Aquariums are a lot of work to keep clean. My dad used to keep fish, it can be an expensive hobby. I think I’ll stick with fish swimming across my computer monitor.

I have a small aquarium for my gold fish! It does not ease my stress but I do love my fish. An enjoyable read.

  • Tina Cassello on Feb 17, 2010

I am glad your son loves his fish and finds them amusing and relaxing. I never could relate to fish that I had as a child, or see why people would consider them pets. I just think of what boring lives they lead.

  • MartineP on Feb 18, 2010

    Great to keep in mine.

  • Frances Lawrence on Feb 18, 2010

I liked your writing. They had a large aquarium at my son’s school. All the little boys loved the ugly fish that clean the tank.

  • CHAN LEE PENG on Feb 18, 2010

I agree. Seeing fish and rearing pets as well has a thereupetic effect to ease and relieve stress. This has been proven scientifically.

  • Ruby Hawk on Feb 19, 2010

Fish are so calming, they are much better than TV to keep your nerves calm. TV can make you a nerveous wreck.

  • mark ramsay on Feb 25, 2010

I didn’t know you were watching me so closely. I love my fish and I only have to look at them and they calm me down. They are quite hard work to look after though.

  • Butterfly Dreaming on Mar 14, 2010

Many people find watching an aquarium relaxing. Good poem Christine!

  • ronthoughts on Mar 16, 2010

Its truly relaxing and stress relieving. Chinese have different kinds of fishes for aquarium with different purposes, like for luck, austerity, and even for sickness.
    Remarkable poetry!
As if, on everything you see, you can outburst a poem out of it and the result is a rare and astonishing one.
    Thumbs Up!

  • ronthoughts on Mar 16, 2010

    I mean prosperity not austerity!
