A Reflection on the atrocities meted out to the captured Africans by the slave ship’s captain and crew; during their journey through the middle passage on their way to the Americas!
The feeling of helplessness and hopelessness they had to endure as they were landed in this new and unfamiliar land, as they were paraded, prodded, and then auctioned like animals!
The maltreatment that was meted out to them by their owners and masters as they were forced to toil for hours without food or a break for time!
They agony they felt as their women were brutally raped and impregnated at will or while watching their baby daughters killed!
How can I be free, from the untold burden of my recent past and unbelievably painful journey through history?
The pain, anguish and suffering of the evil, atrocious, and wicked experienced called slavery!
The uprooting and removal of my ancestors from their family, homes and lands was an act of cowardice and not bravery!
As it filled the hearts, minds and soul of my forefathers, and their descendants with incomprehensible and perpetual hurt and misery!
The journey to the Americas; especially through the middle passage was of such treachery and debauchery, surviving it was a mystery!
As our men, women and children, no matter their age or condition were chained together in their excretement and vomit!
Many died; many others were killed, still many more were thrown overboard to help to lighten the ship or for sport!
All those who survived this unbelievable journey of cruelty were then sold by the ships Captain into perpetual slavery!
With nothing familiar to guide their hands, they were brutally and ruthlessly forced to till this new and unforgiving land!
They toiled from dusk till dawn, bending their backs to the boiling sun, without food, water or a break for time was the norm,
Their owners were relentless; their master’s worse as they ensured that the job was done with the whip and a curse!
There was no love lost, just evil, hatred and ill, as most of them sought to do what their masters willed so as not to be killed!
The women worked while pregnant still, while the stronger men were told to rape and impregnate their black sisters at will!
The boys were kept; the girls were killed, even though some survived this impending ill to be used as their owners and masters’ thrill!
So when a day had passed and they were all there still, you could hear the sigh of relief and feel a sense of eerie peace!
For the ancestors spirits had not forgotten, this generation of their people, stolen from the land of Africa ravaged, raped and almost killed!
