I often dream of visiting far away lands.

Image via Wikipedia

How lovely it would be to travel to lands

Where the ocean waves lap golden sands.

Where you can stretch beneath the sun’s warm rays

And relax in a haze of carefree days.

Image via Wikipedia

I’d see the hot deserts where few men can dwell,

Where a shimmering mirage can hold you under its spell.

I’d climb mountains which rise majestically high

And cross the great rivers as they flow swiftly by.

Image via Wikipedia

I’d visit those people in countries so poor

And see for myself the conditions they endure,

With dust and disease as far as the eye can see

And children reaching out for help from me.

Image via Wikipedia

I’d love to see the rainforests green

And all of the creatures which hide there unseen.

I’d journey to Egypt and view pyramids grand

And cruise the Nile where crocodiles lie close at hand.

Image via Wikipedia

I’d travel to China and walk the Great Wall

And then to Japan where huge bombs did fall.

Then onto countries where the extreme cold

Makes the ice and snow a wondrous sight to behold.

Image via Wikipedia

All these wonderful places I see in my mind

Imagination’s amazing when you’re feeling confined.

But that’s where experiences like these will remain

As I don’t suppose I’ll ever go travelling again.

Travelling is a great way to enjoy life, my friend. Don’t you think so?

  • Tina Cassello on Mar 17, 2010

I can really identify with you. When I worked at the off priced clothing store I saw so many people from all over the world come in and some made regular trips here. I was amazed that they could afford it. I have never been outside of the USA except briefly to Canada and I’ve seen little of my own country, which I felt I should explore before going anywhere else. It didn’t occur to me as a child and young adult that your countries there are so much smaller and closer that for what would be a trip to a neighboring state here you could be in a whole other culture with a whole other other language, like going from Texas or Oklahoma to Mexico.

Wow! this is so classic in tone. If it was not for the last line, this is so perfect for children to recite. This is so worth the publication in print. Really lovely piece maam, and one of the stanzas fits the Philippines well. I wish I could travel many parts of the world, too.

  • ronthoughts on May 7, 2010

Traveling is great and very enjoyable.
After reading this piece, I had travel with your thoughts too, but of all the enjoyable places, (for sure traveling means to go to beautiful places and enjoy the scenery),
I was deeply touch by “places of the poor countries”.
A rare travel with 56 of us, I mean 57 including me and still more coming to cruise with us.
A powerful piece of poetry. Congrats Christine!
