The very nature of the word uniform indicates that everyone should look the same, but uniformity is not everyone’s style.
There’s always at least one cheerleader who wants to stand apart from the squad by looking different. Maybe this year it’s you! You can encourage your squad’s diversity by helping them find appropriate ways to make their uniforms their own with unique style and flair.
There are times and places for everything. Some events, especially competitions, require squad members to be dressed in perfectly matching cheer uniforms right down to their shoe laces and hair bows. Other events like a pep rally, homecoming celebration, or Friday night football game give squad members a chance to let their individuality shine.
Some pieces of cheerleading apparel help squad members remain unique while still dressing in basic uniform. Try these outfits and ideas to help mix up your uniforms and inspire your own original cheer outfit ideas.
Focus on shoes. Cheer shoes are usually the only part of the required uniform for which squad members are allowed to choose their own brand and style. Many pairs of shoes may be purchased with different colored accents or modified to look unique using colored shoe laces. You can even ask each cheerleader to wear shoelaces in her favorite color; just make sure everyone saves the standard white ones for competitions.
Switch bodysuit colors. Turn your squad into a rainbow of colors by having everyone wear different colored briefs and bodysuits underneath their cheer uniforms. Simple modifications like these can create extra outfits and provide a wider range of uniform options for games and competitions.
Create your own cheer shirt. Cheer squad members can get together for some quality team-building time with a shirt-making party. Ask each squad member to bring a plain or white t-shirt and one crafting item such as puffy paint, dye, or beads. Unique t-shirts can be worn to practices, camp, school, and just about anywhere else. This activity can be paired with a pasta dinner the night before a big pep rally, game, or competition.
Wear flair. Flair encourages squad members to creatively accessorize their uniforms with items found around the house. Items can be clothing items or anything that can be used to dress up an outfit. Costume jewelry, hats, fashion scarves, leg and arm warmers, knee socks, spirit buttons, hair accessories, and even fancy French hair braids are all forms of flair that can creatively dress up a uniform.
