A look at how to make money on online publishing sites.
I wrote an article a few weeks back about starting a successful triond page. (Attention Triond Newcomers: Here is how to succeed on Triond) Based on the feedback, it served as helpful for a number of newcomers. Some of them have begun asking more advanced questions, and i figured I would do a sequel. If you have not read the first article, you should either skim it, or at least familiarize yourself with the site.
If you have followed these four basic steps, you should have a triond site that is functioning and generating a moderate number of hits. Now the question arises… how do you turn this into actual dollars? The short answer is this… hard work and time. There is no shortcut, no easy way to do this. I put in 90 minutes to 2 hours daily, not counting the time I actually spend writing. I am not getting rich, but I should break $100.00 in just my second month of writing. For those interested, here is how I did it.
It begins and ends with the writing. If you write garbage, you won’t do well regardless of how well you promote it. Take the time to go over little details like punctuation and such.
If you write poetry, expect to make even less, and get fewer hits.
The subject matter is important as well. If you write about something no one cares about, no one will read it. Current events are normally good for what I call ‘quick hit’ articles. For example, a brief piece I wrote on American Idol generated several thousand hits for about a week, and very little since. Whereas an article I wrote about cover songs did just over 5,000 the first week and has continued to garner several hundred hits a day since. If you look at the top articles on the hot list, you will see that these articles are on subjects that appeal to a large audience.
If you want to do a factual, scientific, or informative article, do your research!
The title and tags are equally important. This is how people find your work.
Fishing for hits and views in the forum is pointless. Even if you are successful at it, you will have collected all of 30-50 hits, which will get you all of a nickel.
Bear in mind: your comments and likes have little bearing on your revenue. An article with 100 hits and 100 comments will make you the same as one with 100 hits and no comments.
Now that you have an article written and accepted, you have to promote. Promote, promote, promote. On the ‘content’ screen is the ’share’ icon. (up and down arrow on the right side) Double click it, and a large list of other sites where you can promote your articles will po up. I use all of them. The initial signing up took me about two hours total.
The ‘big money’ in triond comes from bringing viewers in from outside of triond. I use other forums extensively. For example, I spammed my American Idol article all over Idol chatrooms and forums. Sports articles in sport specific areas, and music in music forums. Look at Triond not as a place to make your money, but as a home base of sorts.
Don’t overproduce. Putting 8 pieces per day out may seem like a good way to generate hits, but if you’re looking for steady readers, this will overwhelm.
None of these are points i came up with… I learned all of this from others in the forum. Just by listening. When it comes to writnig successfully online, networking is important.
If you are one of those who are not here for the money, then it is as simple as I said in my first piece…read other people’s stuff. Comment, put likes to let them know you were there. Many will reciprocate. Don’t be afraid to send them a message letting them know you did. Spend time in the forum, because there are some very talented people out there. Reading good work only improves your own.
Keep searching. I have found over a dozen of the forums that generate huge numbers of hits when I advertise my work there. There are almost infinite possibilities in cyberspace.
If you follow these tips, you should see improvement. These techniques work if you put the time and effort into them. I have been actively publishing here for just a few months, and I average just over 2500 hits per day. It is possible to walk both sides of the line… I have pieces I do just to make a bit of money, and those I do for love of writing. Just make sure, before you start an article, that you know which one it is. Good hunting, good writing!
Thank you. I found the bit about choosing an articles subject matter wisely and linking your articles in the appropriate forums to be especially helpful.
