A short poem by Christian A. Miles about a girl who cannot escape her past, or herself.

I am the darkened shadow.

A dark shadow swept upon her.

Her feet clung to the floor like cement blocks.

Blocks in her head. No time for thinking, she said.
This is it. You’re last farewell.

Clinging worst to the floor by far.

Farewell, my love. Farewell to all.

Her feet loosened in a fast speed.

Her thoughts moved even faster.

Her shoes strode back and forth,

Running down the street.

The road hard beneath.

Passing people,
Leaving the past behind.
No one cared to notice the tears that she cried.

A life of lying and living in lies.

Shadows pulling, and pulling her down.
She was more than the average victim.

She was the messiah of never-ending pain and cries.

Suffering took place and stayed in her heart.
She had loved many, but many had fallen to her side.
Her eyes burnt like fire when she ran.

Her shoes clampering on the pavement beneath.

This was the run she had waited for. The run to be free.
Muscle began to ache.. pulling her closer to the ground.

Her feet once again clung to the ground. Stopping her directly in her tracks.
She heard cries behind her. Don’t leave me.

Don’t leave me to die.

She turned back to say. No one can save. No one is left to help.
She continued on her path down the road until she became a darkened shadow herself.
Only her future laid before her.
