I was awake very early this morning and I listened to the news.

I put the news on early this morning,
As I lay wide awake in my bed,
In the hope it would calm the thoughts,
That so often gather in my head.
But oblivion was just not to be
As I listened to the woes of the world,
All the dreadful things that are happening
For me were being slowly unfurled.
I heard about the war in the Middle East,
About the terrible air strikes there have been,
And of the bombing of schools and civilians,
And of the awful sights children have seen.
I heard about the closure of stores
And of employees going on the dole,
And of pension schemes being reviewed,
Prospects of work doing little to console.
I heard that council tax debts have increased
Because many are unable to pay
And due to the effects of the financial crisis
No longer in their homes can they stay
Then to make things worse the weather came on
With the news that the freeze is still here.
In the south temperatures are worse than Iceland
With no sign that it’s going to clear.
With all these problems now added to my own
I decided to write down all that I’d heard,
Then I said to myself how lucky I was
To be able to put my thoughts into words.

And the saddest part is that there is nothing you or I can do to stop them.

  • Glynis Smy on Jan 7, 2009

The world is a sad place at the moment, we can only support each other and hope. Lovely work.

  • Morgana on Jan 7, 2009

Sometimes I rather not watch the news, you seldom hear anything positive that might give you some hope for our future.

What you wrote was the truth and I have to echo CE Lewallen and Glynis Smy-we aren’t in good shape with no bright light at the end of the tunnel any time soon.Likes the way it was written Christine.

wonderful piece, it’s the reality! that’s the reason why i hate news… i really did not watched news, it only makes me problematic, the tragedy makes me cry, especially if children are involved!

    I love the ending!

‘I decided to write down all that I’d heard,
Then I said to myself how lucky I was
To be able to put my thoughts into words.’

Yes, you sure are lucky to be able to put your thoughts into words. You do it so well. It seems to come so easily for you. Another great piece of work, Christine.

  • Little Miss Lizzy on Jan 7, 2009

You have managed to sum up here just what so many of us are feeling right now. I wish there was a channel called happy news where we could find out things that happen every day to lift our spirit. Luckily triond is here for us to escape to and read about the rich tapestries of life! Thanks Christine :)

  • Judy Sheldon on Jan 7, 2009

Like Little Miss Lizzy states – some good news would be nice, but good news doesn’t see papers or get sponsors. Humans are a morbid bunch. They seem to like reading about someone is worse off than they are so that they can feel better??

    Great poem, Christine, God bless.

It makes me dread to read the paper and listen to the news.It gets worse every day.I feel like closing my ears and being ignorant of all the daily happenings. You stated it very well.

  • AC Hamilton III on Jan 7, 2009

That’s why we need our Triond friends…to put a little positive charge in all the negativity at large…All right! Thank You.

    Try to get some rest.

  • Unofre Pili on Jan 8, 2009

We share the same thoughts maam. Let’s pray for the immediate end to the current war being fought in the middle east. War is always unkind.

  • Karen Gross on Feb 9, 2009

We are blessed in so many ways, despite everything this world throws at us. The world outside my window is grey and dismal this afternoon, but the joy of the Lord is always sunny!

  • Jacques Berkeley on Dec 6, 2011

    Good!
