I was chatting with Val Mills on the Writers Facebook chat line last week about cleaning and knitting, and she said that she thought there was a poem in there somewhere. Not being one to turn down a challenge this is my cleaning poem. The knitting one will follow shortly.

It’s early in the morning

And I’ve woken with a groan

At the thought of all the housework

Which I have to do alone.

It’s not a chore I like

And it takes up so much time

From the things I really want to do

Like writing prose and rhyme.

The weekly washing’s piling up

Which really is a bore,

And then I’ve got to iron it

And mop the kitchen floor.

Then it will be dinner time

I’ll have to cook a meal.

There’s nothing in the fridge

So with shopping I must deal.

Oh why is woman’s work

Such a heavy load to bear?

I think I’ll go on strike

And let my hubby do his share.

  • Carolyn Cordon on Nov 2, 2010

A woman’s work is never done, because there’s always another person to come along and muck things up! A thankless task and should be worth much more than a woman gets for it.

  • Saurav Banerjee on Nov 2, 2010

Well written. I am waiting for the knotting one.

  • Saurav Banerjee on Nov 2, 2010

  • CHAN LEE PENG on Nov 2, 2010

When we regard it as a fun thing to do, then we won’t feel that way. A good poem anyway!

  • johnnydod on Nov 2, 2010

  • ashan1614 on Nov 2, 2010

I’ve always wondered why housework falls to the woman by default, even if she has a job outside the house…… Nice one, Christine! It brought a smile to my face. :D

  • Melody SJAL on Nov 2, 2010

    I can certainly relate.

  • T. S. Lewis on Nov 2, 2010

If you don’t write poetry will be very wasted… this is too good, do you know, each time I read your poems, I have urge to write also? Very nice.
Haha, housework, I actually enjoy the clearing of clutter, but detest washing.

  • Judi Eddy on Nov 2, 2010

  • Guy Hogan on Nov 2, 2010

Don’t blame me. I’m a bachelor. I do my own cleaning.

  • Angelonearth2001 on Nov 2, 2010

You are not alone my dear…….what a pain? But you brought back a balm with your poetry at least I do not feel alone no more……hugs

  • LoveDoctor on Nov 2, 2010

Sorry about the way you are feeling. Maybe you can postpone the cleaning till further notice. Ironing is tedious. I’ve tried doing it before and it takes me forever just to do one shirt. Cooking, if you are still not in the mood to prepare anything tonight, then just order or go out to eat with your hubby. Washing clothes can be a pain too. I know what you mean. This is a great poem.

  • lindalulu on Nov 2, 2010

  • Sangeeta Chaudhary on Nov 2, 2010

Very true sometimes daily schedule brings in monotony. And to break this monotony one needs change.

  • J M Lennox on Nov 2, 2010

So true – who was that person who said: ‘a womens work is never done’? A very enjoyable poem for us, even if the topic is not, for you, Christine. Thank you.

  • jimbob1 on Nov 2, 2010

CR…thanks for rising to the challenge!!! Welcome to my world of cleaning and shining…I do it at home and then go to work where I get do it all over again…of course I voted that I like it because I can so readily identify with it…thanks and take care

  • Sharif Ishnin on Nov 2, 2010

If women go on strike, all households would stand to a halt. Then we need an economic stimulus package to keep it going again. Hmm… maybe its a good thing Christine.lol.

  • Priyanka D on Nov 2, 2010

    Nice poem.

  • Val Mills on Nov 2, 2010

Oh dear, don’t let my husband read this. He actually has always shared the housework when I’m working full-time! He has been an angel this last week while my eyes recover.

  • Atanacio on Nov 2, 2010

    as always loved it LOL

  • deedaG50 on Nov 2, 2010

Love it. Why does it sound strange that a woman should hate domestic chores. we are all different. express yourself.

  • LadyElena on Nov 2, 2010

Nice Poem Christine and I hear you… Let me share my secret of the fastest way to do your housework.

  • PR Mace on Nov 3, 2010

Honey, we all feel the same way. I want a clean house but I really hate to do it. I want to write or read my friends, not clean the floors. But I must say since our children have grown and left the nest my husband does his fair share. What a fun poem.

  • Jimmy Shilaho on Nov 3, 2010

    A great entry, different style.

  • CA Johnson on Nov 3, 2010

Your poem was great. It reminded me that I have to clean up too. I do not like to clean up either. It takes so long.

  • Rhodora Bande on Nov 9, 2010

Lol! I’m not sure if I’ll react very honestly about the topic. :-) No, I’m not making another revelation about myself so I guess I’ll just say, nice share. Haha. I admire you for being able to write poetry out of something ordinary. That’s the power that poets have.

  • wonder on Nov 10, 2010

An everyday poem we all should rant.

  • sandcastle on Nov 14, 2010

    Sounds familiar!

Raising four children, I am just glad my husband learned to do his share before I think about going on strike! LOL.

House work is not something I am good at when I have a full time job. I had to postpone joining my husband in the US until my kids learned to tend for themselves :)

  • cjnuble on Nov 15, 2010

    me too! :-)

  • revivor on Nov 19, 2010

I’m glad you belong to my club! The housework haters! lol

  • Erin Miller on Mar 18, 2011

Housework is tedious. LOL. I must say though my brother Keith is much neater than I am and actually irons his clothing meanwhile I just hang my clothes in my closet when I had one. Now I am slow to fold or just stuff the clothing into my bins. LOL

  • Jacques Berkeley on Dec 6, 2011

    Excellent!
