I find firemen really appealing.

*

Some years ago we lived in a house

Which was often felt damp and cold,

So we’d light a coal fire and snuggle up warm

Without thought of what might unfold.

*

One night as I dozed in my bed

A loud crackling sound did I hear.

It came from the nearby chimney breast

And filled me with the greatest of fear.

*

The wall it got hotter and hotter

And we didn’t have much time to waste.

We had to get everyone outside the house

And call the fire brigade with great haste.

*

They arrived at the gate within minutes,

And as the source of the fire they did seek,

The sight of the six burly firemen

Made my knees go rather weak.

*

I love a man in uniform,

And once the fire was under control,

I watched these men in amazement

As they cleared the fireplace of wet soot and coal.

*

They towered above my hubby

And their muscles were so well honed.

I imagined beneath those uniforms

Bodies so beautifully toned.

*

It’s a time I will always remember

Not only for the danger we’d survived,

But the sight of those magnificent firemen

In my mind remains very much alive.

  • pguims on Apr 4, 2011

They are some of our unrecognized heroes. And this poem is kinda ’sweet’ though your experience is scary and sad…

  • No Share on Apr 4, 2011

There is just something about men in uniform that makes them really interesting and authoritative. If I get stuck in a remote island, I’d choose a fireman too so I’ll survive.

  • lapasan on Apr 4, 2011

Those firemen were like angels coming to your home to save you from possible catasthrope.

  • PR Mace on Apr 4, 2011

    They are certainly my heros.

  • Likha on Apr 4, 2011

Many children aspire to be firemen if only for the uniform. Cute post as usual Christine.

  • Hettie on Apr 4, 2011

    Great post Christine

  • Freethinking on Apr 4, 2011

It takes a special type of person and personality to put yourself in harms way for those you do not even know. As always, another great poem.

  • CHIPMUNK on Apr 4, 2011

    Great writing like your poems

  • anndavey650 on Apr 4, 2011

  • Val Mills on Apr 4, 2011

That must have been so scary. Firemen came to our rescue once too, not so long ago, when the roof was lifting off our house in the middle of a major storm. It was too dark for me to see though :-)

  • Uma Shankari on Apr 4, 2011

    That was cute…

  • J M Lennox on Apr 4, 2011

It’s the old ”night in shining armour” thing Christine. I remember staring out the window at the road that stretched a long way to our front gate on our property in the bush, when I was about 10, waiting for my ”night in shining armour” to come riding up. Lol – it took about another 30 years before he did, but it was worth the wait. (He was also once in the NSW Rural Fire Brigade). I love your poem!

  • OhSugar on Apr 4, 2011

  • wonder on Apr 4, 2011

Really it must be such a relief, what a dangerous situation it was! A great recollection and poem, I also love uniformed nurses who console us when we are in pain.

  • Jimmy Shilaho on Apr 4, 2011

Christine, Christine, what would we do without you, you always manage to draw a smile from me with such lines.

  • Starpisces on Apr 4, 2011

you are right, they usually look very nice in uniforms. My guys look great when they wear coverall. Hehe, Christine, how about the priest at your wedding? Was that an uniform too? That’s why you fall in love with the priest at your wedding? (referring to your earlier poem). Just teasing you, don’t scold me, hehehe.

CR…As a now retired professional career fire fighter with 20 years active service in uniform and turn-out bunker gear and as an honourary life member of the Canadian fire service I would like to thank you for paying tribute to my brothers and sisters in this international fraternity. Who better to do this than you? You have done yeoman service here and of course I voted that I like it…thanks and take care

They contribute time and service elsewhere. They need to be respected.

  • gaby7 on Apr 4, 2011

Men in Uniform are like creatures from another planet! They stay watching over us in the wee hours of the night as we snore and sleep with our spouses! They go to the front line to die for us as they follow orders, they enter a raging fire to pick a child abandoned by the mother or a child thrown in pit latrines-I respect those guys in uniforms everywhere they may be!

  • Erin Miller on Apr 4, 2011

My friend Samie would agree to this poem. LOL It is a great tribute at any rate. :)

  • Minister Marlene on Apr 6, 2011

Such a nice tribute for firemen. It’s a beautiful poem. I love men in uniform as well. These are men who risk their lives, firemen, policemen, etc. They stand for something and will risk their very life for the sake of saving another. Men of honor, bravery and courage. I’m glad they were there for you both.

I bought your book and a few others from digital A few days ago but have not read as yet. I look forward to reading!
