I Thought I Walked Away.
the nights are endless, darker still,
the days of longing woke from sleep
a slumber that since morning came,
had plunged the pain to waters deep
such rest has forged a peace within,
a peace that though the waters calm,
could not attempt to tame the owl
that haunted evening’s quiet psalm
i found in sleep the truth in dreams
enough to numb the ears from cries,
these cries that bled from yearning still
to leave the pain to paradise
i thought ’twas death, the call of death,
the long awaited exit gate,
farewell to woes not understood
hello to joy’s restoring fate
but such illusions come about
when reason cannot hold enough,
and love and longing both depart
and leave a diamond in the rough
’twas not the heart’s eternal rest,
nor longing’s good farewell that came
but sleep, a nap that stole from time,
a bargained hour free of shame
for pain and yearning swept the air
when wakened by the blinding ray
return the thoughts i left behind,
the day i thought i walked away
