This poem is set to the tune of “I wish I was in Shore Bridge Now”, a chanty sung often at science fiction conventions and meetings of the Society for Creative Anachronism. This type of parody–science fiction or fantasy theme set to a familiar tune–is called “filk”. I’ve been writing filk for quite a while now; it is fun and is an opportunity to clean up fine, old tunes with a good rhythm with lyrics my grandchildren can enjoy.

Ah, here I head up Shimmer Ridge
Oh, I wish I was in Iron Forge now
A bloody great mage
Comes charging down the hill
His only desire is me to kill,
Blam, Blam them all!
Oh, I need gold, and weed from Shimmer hold
Oh, I wish I was in Iron Forge now
I need some Barley Beer and Ever-shine too
And to mend my axe till it’s just like new
Blam, Blam them all…
But I haven’t the copper
Or the tin to forge
So I’m stalking up this great big gorge
Blam, Blam them all!
Cho.
Some day I’ll be a smith so bold
Oh, I wish I was in Iron Forge now
I’ll work in silver and I’ll work in gold,
I’ll have all the cash my bank can hold,
Blam, Blam them all…
I’ll make myself a mythril cloak so fine
Everyone will want one just like mine
Blam, Blam them all!
But here I head up Shimmer Ridge
Oh, I wish I was in Iron Forge now
A bloody great mage
Comes charging down the hill
His only desire is me to kill,
Blam, Blam them all!
