As I have grown older in my years I have given some thought to legacy; what is it I would leave my children, my family, my friends when my time comes to leave this life behind, beyond those things which are material in nature? The following poem reflects my thoughts…
IF I COULD GIVE YOU
If I could give you, somehow leave you
a priceless legacy,
I’ve often sat and pondered
what the greatest gift would be.
Oh I could leave you money,
treasures, untold wealth,
but that’s not going to happen.
I barely make ends meet myself…
though I wish you all you need
and a fair share of what you want,
that is not the legacy I’d leave,
it truly is not
for gold and silver turn to dust
and vanish on a breeze,
and wealth won’t buy you happiness,
‘tis not a fitting legacy,
not the best that I could give
to you, my family and friends
when on this Earth I cease to live,
when my time with you should end.
If I would leave you anything,
it would be fond memories
of good times, happy times we’ve shared,
those days of you and me
as we’ve overcome life’s obstacles,
burdens, sickness, pain,
leaning on each other,
learning to smile again…
the joy we’ve found in sharing
both sunny and rainy days,
if I could leave a legacy
it would be sweet memories that stay
and the greatest legacy of all,
I hope and pray I leave
is that Love, the greatest love of all,
is that you will receive.
You see, I haven’t always done things right,
life isn’t always fair,
I haven’t always taken time
to show how much I care.
I’ve often used poor judgment,
acted, spoke before I thought
and that in retrospect I see
has tarnished life a lot
but there is a gift that I can share,
the love of Jesus Christ,
how very much He’s done for me,
how He has changed my life.
I haven’t always followed Him
nor done things as I should,
to often doing what I wouldn’t
instead of what I would
but He’s forgiven me my past
with a mercy and the greatest love,
so someday, when I’m no longer here
I’ll go on living with Him above
and I want you to know this Jesus,
so you forever will live too,
in glory, peace and happiness,
this is my legacy to you.
For God so loves each one of us
and I want you to know
how very much I love you,
and that God loves you so
much more, so very much.
If I could give you anything,
one thing I can leave to you from me
is that you’ll know,
know the change that God has made,
within the heart of me,
know how very much I love you
and how much more God loves you too,
this, my family and friends
is the gift I’d wish for you.
Lord, let this be my legacy
should today my life here end,
let this be the gift I leave
to my family and friends.
The greatest love I’ll ever know
is that love You’ve given me,
Lord, let others see You in my life,
let that be my legacy
that they also will know You,
accept this gift of life,
Your gift that we may always live
should my life here end this night.
