My heart proud and torn…
I’m Southern – through and through
My feet bared and black
Walk through fields of high cotton
My body tanned and broken
Lies in mounds once forgotten
My heart proud and torn
Beats the rhythm of a gospel song
My chin held high
turns toward the southern sky
Righting what was once wrong
I’m Southern – through and through
