Last Christmas my kitchen went up in flames, my family was displaced and I instantly became aware of the devastating effects of a Fire.

The lights begin to flicker

A beeping sound slowly gets bigger

It gets cloudy fast

And the ringing sounds get loud

And then there’s a huge flash

Breathing gets really difficult

Sweat pours

Smoke soars

Crackling roars

Screams and emotions run rampant

There’s trembling in the floor

Escape is priority

Calls go out to local authorities

Human life has seniority

The walls begin to bubble

The structure is turning to rubble

Black smoke is a covering

Inhaling means a smothering

The incinerator cooks

The flames are crooks

Stealing away life

Stealing away livelihood

Taking away from people

All that they deems as good

Displacement from comfort

Removal from residence

Sorrow and sadness very evident

Material possessions become irrelevant

Lives appreciated

Engagement in the heat

The flames are jumping

Aiming to repeat

To engulf and take over

All that’s in their path

There are fighters

That try to blast

But at times they arrive too late

And the damage that has been done

The battle has not been won

A red cross placed upon the lawn

Unknown placement

The roof has been blown

Shelter provided by those with hearts

For them begins a new start

For others an obituary

Tells the life story

Others a crash cart

A pulmonary restart

Skin graphs to replace

The smoldering flesh

Many others lie in distress

Their souls singed

With memories they cringe

On alcohol they binge

The inferno awakens

All sorts of things

Reduces flight

And plucks wings

Hallelujah we sing

For survivors of this king

Over destruction he reigns

At the thought we feign

Have convalescent dreams

Of rebuilding lives

And a greater ends to a means.

Have never had to experience such a thing, thank God. But it is a blessing to ecape with your life.

You’ve painted a very vivid picture here – one can almost feel the heat, smell the smoke and see the flurry of activity.
