This poem was written with regard to Kenya’s post election violence of 2007/2008 and the situation in Zimbwabwe then and soon after. It is mainly talking of leaders, ladership, and how people elect their leaders.

IN SEARCH OF LEADERSHIP

Some say, and I quote;

“A country is made by her people”

I say NO;

“A country is made by her leaders.”

Once upon a time,

She was the basket of Africa.

Producing food enough to feed her

And even feed others.

Those “others” respected her.

But now she has to be fed,

To be fed by those that she used to feed.

Ooh! The “Mighty” Zimbabwe!

Once she had a wonderful leader.

But the leader’s principles mutated.

The retrogressive leader now leads

With a flesh coated iron fist,

And with fangs made ready to bite.

A country once made by her leader

Is now emaciated,

And staggering at the grave’s mouth.

For the leader stopped making her.

He instead drove his teeth deep into her flesh,

And the crackling sound of her breaking bones

Was heard as far as never imagined.

Why aren’t you mourning? My friend!

Once you were a “true heaven of peace”

Respected and viewed with envy by all.

Ooh! The “heaven” is now at the door steps of “hell”

With the powerful chewing cunningly the weak,

Unmasked and undressed!

Now standing naked in the eyes of all.

What a shame!

The “leaders” ‘made’ you,

The “leaders are now eating you.”

Your “freedom” you thought you got,

Maybe your eyes, ears and perception played tricks on you!

You are still a “slave”

In the greatest slavery concealed and cocooned,

In the so called “an independent state”

Only that your “master” is your own “brother”.

You made an effort to be heard,

You managed to create an effective “mouth piece”

Your cry and shout made your “master and leader”

Change his course of action.

Or rather delay it.

“Let’s incapacitate and neutralize her “mouth piece”

The leaders sat down and decided.

And she will never have to bother us.

So the leaders thought.

“Any attempt to open her “mouth piece”

“So as to negatively depict us and make her cry known to all,”

“Would result in her total bold destruction and even death.”

The leaders resolved.

Then let’s go out and pretend,
