A poem about abuse.

In the silence of the house
she huddles under blankets of soft down
Wishing she were invisible
trying not to make a sound

In the silence of the house
with everyone tucked away
He waits until the moon is high
he waits until it’s time to play

He silently creeps across the hall
like a thief into the night
With plans to steal her innocence
she’s not strong enough to fight

Reaching for her bedroom door
he quickly slips inside
Softly calling out her name
you can run but you can’t hide

He promises not to hurt her
as tears stream down her face
He tells her this is just a game
this will be our secret place

As his hands reach out to touch her
he makes her promise not to tell
She shrinks so small within herself
she’s sure this must be hell

As the years flew by, the child grew up
in the silence of a dark black hole
But in her silence she held a secret
locked deep within her soul

She knows the angels led her
from the darkness to the light
Bringing her love and laughter
she’s no longer afraid of the night

She’s a woman and a mother now
with love and light within her heart
She’s learned to leave the past alone
no longer living in the dark
