The dread of not accepting who you are.
I’ve dreamed all along in white.
Loving those and looking up to those
That had no care for me.
I was raised by white
Told that if I was not
Pale,
I was, worth not a thing
No matter what abuse I went through
I was not to be believed
Because I was not “pure”.
To be fair was to be my goal in life.
To have straight hair
The right of way.
So I have come to dream in white.
All cream without the coffee.
Now I see however that
I can be empowered by the black.
Going to women’s empowerment seminars
May give my dreams some color.
I am learning to embrace both sides
Of the scene.
Dreaming in one tone
Has been my downfall so far
Dreaming in two-tone
May be my release.
