Why do all the other mothers that are the same age as their own mother seem so much younger?
Why do the kids think Mom is old
And other women her age still young?
Is it something Mom said she’d forgotten she said
Or could it be something she’s done?
“We’ve been running all day, let’s not go there”
Mom says to her kids who’re still wired.
But that wisdom is lost when those kids later brood,
“How come Mom is always so tired?”
When birthdays come my friends make a fuss
To hear my exact years are untold.
The kids must think when their mom does this too.
“Mom really must be getting old.”
Mom, you’re not old and you won’t be old until
Those kids reach their own middle age.
So on your birthday when they ask if you’re old
Say “I was younger than you now on my birthday.”
