A tongue in cheek kids’ primer on the American political process presented in Dr. Seuss rhyme.
Ruby said to Amber,
“I’ve been thinking some.
We really ought to bop bop bop
Our children when they’re young.”
Amber said to Ruby,
“I strongly disagree!
Instead of bopping, I think we
Should bee bee bee bee bee.”
Ruby told all her friends
The thing that Amber said-
And all her friends in shock proclaimed
They’d much rather be dead.
But Amber told all her friends too,
And soon they had agreed
To start a new foundation called
“The Bee Bee Bee Bee Bee.”
Now things are escalating,
Far past contemplating.
I’ve got a cause!
I’ve got a cause!
If Congress won’t agree,
I’m breaking all their laws.
I’ve written to our President,
I hope it gives him pause.
I’ve got a cause!
I’ve got a cause!
When Ruby learned that Amber
Had gotten organized,
She saw that corporate action
Was a thing most highly prized.
She primed the preachers’ preaching
To bop bop bop bop bop–
And determine she would take
This matter to the top.
They’ve both formed coalitions,
They’ve nailed their platforms down.
They’ve posted signs and banners,
In towns for miles around.
They’re shouting at each microphone
How much the other’s wrong–
While marching into Washington
A good ten million strong.
Things are escalating,
Far past contemplating.
I’ve got a cause!
I’ve got a cause!
If Congress won’t agree,
I’m breaking all their laws.
I’ve written to our President,
I hope it gives him pause.
I’ve got a cause!
I’ve got a cause!
Well, the President decided
To hear both parties views.
He proposed a fair debate
That made the front page news.
The multitudes all gathered,
The media was there.
Ruby glared at Amber,
And snarled, “You’d best play fair!”
With ninety cameras rolling,
Amber spoke most fervently.
“I believe America
Should bee bee bee bee bee!”
Then Ruby told her story,
To each picketer and cop.
“Our nation is the strongest
When we bop bop bop bop bop!”
All across the land,
A great refrain began…
I’ve got a cause!
I’ve got a cause!
If Congress won’t agree,
I’m breaking all their laws.
I’ve written to our President,
I hope it gives him pause.
I’ve got a cause!
I’ve got a cause!
Then Amber said to Ruby,
“The Lord is on our side!
When your preachers preached,
I’m certain that they lied.
If God himself were here today,
He’d say, ‘Bee bee bee bop.”
Then Ruby pulled up short–
“Did I hear you say……‘Bop’?
Amber said, “It’s mostly bee,
But yes, I did say bop.
It seems to me we might agree,
If we could only talk.”
Then Ruby said, “I must admit,
This bopping needs some bee.”
Then together they proclaimed,
“Let’s BEE BOP BEE BOP BEE!”
All across the land,
A new refrain began…
We’ve got a cause!
We’ve got a cause!
If Congress won’t agree,
We’re breaking all their laws.
We’re speaking to our President,
We hope it gives him pause.
We’ve got a cause!
We’ve got a cause!
Then Lincoln’s statue wept
To think of Union won-
As demonstrators by bus loads
Returned the way they’d come.
The President went golfing,
And Congress gave a sigh.
The anchor man wiped his brow,
And said, “To all, goodnight!”
What makes our country great,
Isn’t hard to contemplate…
I’ve got a cause!
I’ve got a cause!
If Congress won’t agree,
I’m breaking all their laws.
I’ve written to our President,
I hope it gives him pause.
I’ve got a cause!
I’ve got a cause!
Composer’s Note: I hope to locate an artist who would wish to provide the pictures to accompany these words as a children’s book. Interested?
