About exploration and Juan Ponce de Leon’s travels.
In 1493, the silence of the sea was broken.
16 ships carried 1,500 men
Sailing, sailing, sailing
From Spain, across the Atlantic Ocean!
On board was Columbus the brave,
With him stood a skinny, tall man.
His name is Juan Ponce de Leon,
And he had a great ambition.
The ocean fused with the sky,
Through endless night and endless day.
They sailed on, when at last,
They steered into a beautiful bay.
A gigantic island they landed upon,
Santo Domingo they later named,
Ponce de Leon made it home,
Because the air was fresh and he loved to roam.
He had the heart of a veteran soldier.
He conquered Puerto Rico and became governor.
Although he was rich, he became older.
His face grew wrinkles, his hair turned white,
He wished he was young again with all his might.
He heard a story that made him so excited.
A fountain of youth hidden on a mysterious island!
The air is perfumed by a thousand flowers,
A drop from this fountain would make youth return!
Looking for this fountain, he sailed north,
Drank from all the springs and rivers in his path.
All the drinking made him sick,
But his wrinkles didn’t decrease a single bit.
Until one day, they touched a land so mysterious.
He named it La Florida since flowers were endless.
He looked everywhere, where was the fountain of youth?
He left in dismay, but discovered the Gulf Stream.
Later he returned to Florida to search for the fountain.
He was ambushed by Indians hidden in the mountain.
THWACK! TWHWAK! Arrows flew from the sky,
Ponce de Leon was wounded, barely got away.
They sailed to Cuba, where he died.
He was later moved to Puerto Rico where he was buried.
The Fountain of Youth has never been discovered,
But Juan Ponce de Leon will always be remembered.
