This was inspired by a book I read while attending Appalachian State University. The book is about young black male adolescents who are treated unfairly by teachers and students.
Judged by My Color and Sex
Yes I am a black male,
But that does not mean I will fail.
Help me understand why you judge me by the color of my skin.
I know you think I will never win.
I might be very smart
But teachers don’t care to teach me from the heart.
When you look at me all you see is black.
It is no wonder why I can’t stay on track.
You put me in detention
But all I crave is some attention.
All I did is look at you wrong
And you just push me right along.
Why can’t I be equal and have the same chances.
No others get my same glances.
If you judge me by my color and sex today,
Will it guide me further and further away?
