I put together some common stereotypes people make about Asians in a poem form. From being half American and half Asian, I can relate to ALL of these -_- and I think all of the Asians out there can too.
Just because I’m Asian……
It doesn’t mean that I am short,
It doesn’t mean I can be pushed around,
It doesn’t mean I can’t drive a car without crashing,
It doesn’t mean I’m perfect and you’re not.
Just because I’m Asian,
It doesn’t mean I can rattle off math formulas off the top of my head,
It doesn’t mean I love to read (which I do, but that’s not the point),
It doesn’t mean I have a personal tutor I meet with every day,
It doesn’t mean I’m Buddhist.
Just because I’m Asian,
It doesn’t mean I eat rice every day,
It doesn’t mean I have a donut shop,
It doesn’t mean I eat domesticated animals like dogs, cats, and rats.
Just because I’m Asian,
It doesn’t mean I love Pokémon,
It doesn’t mean I can’t beat you in a basketball game,
or in a running race.
It doesn’t mean I know martial arts.
Just because I’m Asian,
It doesn’t mean I can’t open my eyes cause they’re so squinty,
It doesn’t mean I fold paper cranes all day.,
It doesn’t mean I eat everything with chopsticks,
It doesn’t mean sushi is my favorite food.
Just because I’m Asian,
It doesn’t mean I’m going to be a doctor or a lawyer when I grow up. (or it doesn’t mean I have parents who are doctors and lawyers)
It doesn’t mean I can read Chinese characters.
It doesn’t mean I play the piano or the violin.
It doesn’t mean I get straight A’s.
Don’t expect me to be as you think I should to be, I am who I am, and you can’t change that.
