When you get that little feeling in the middle of the night, do you lay there for hours or get out of bed and do it?

Late at night

when the sun has set.

I curl up

with my favorite pet.

I fall asleep

and await the dawn.

I like it warm

so have blankets on.

Then at 3am

just about every night

I lie awake

with no delight.

I toss and turn

I fight the feeling.

Look at the walls

look at the ceiling.

I wont get out of bed

I wont give in.

I am too sleepy to move,

too tired to sin.

Yet I cannot escape

I know it gets worse

getting older you know

its a bit of a curse.

An hour has passed

of laying awake

when I finally realize

the path I must take.

I get up from the bed

its 4am I see

why didn’t I get up earlier

I just had to pee…

So there is someone else in the world. I quit fighting it long ago. When I wake up, I get up. Sam’s ready to eat, anyway. There’s no rule and no clock. Morning is just as good as night and the coffee tastes better.

I knew where you were leading right from the start, know all about that feeling :-)
Well done, you’ve captured it brilliantly.

  • Jon Abraham on Dec 12, 2009

A suggestion would be to drink less fluids before going to bed.

Very cute! I noticed that your husband thinks the same way mine does. Must be a guy thing.

Aren’t we fortunate to be living in this modern world with indoor plumbing? In past generations, folks would have to make a trip outside to get the job done.

I hear it happens with age. :)

  • spiritwalker on Dec 17, 2009

I never expected to hear you say something so simple. I liked this and its simple concept was made complex with its realistic tossings and turnings and wide eyed sleeplessness.

  • Nicholas Peterson on Dec 18, 2009

Such is the plight of the midnight toilet run, and the insomniac too i suppose.
