When the weather is wet, cold, and mean
Being briefly in the sun on that cool day
Cannot the sun’s full embrace replace
When you’re just mean
A store front smile on an impish face
Cannot reliably trace
Your commitment to a fairness aligned with grace
When you’re just mean
The friendliest shake of your hand
Sure to honor the presence of every man
Cannot remedy gossips gotten out of hand
When you’re just mean
The shiniest sparkle in your eye
Though its presence the laws of nature defy
Does not soothe your rough hello or goodbye
When you’re just mean
Running roughshod over the dignity
Of people who are different that you see
Will not set anyone’s conscience free
From labeling you as mean
