Rememberance.

A new day starts, when the sun does rise. But I cant forget those long, deathly cries.

I’m just a slave boy, a black man’s son. But what i saw would shock anyone.

The pain in his eyes, the look of despair. And yet i did nothing, just stood watching in fear.

I had no mother, no father, no-one who cared. I had spent my whole life being so scared.

But what really could a small, slave boy do? If i tried defending him I’d get whipped too.

Then the whip came down on the edge of his back. His knees buckled, he screamed, he was under attack.

But the master ignored him, whipping him harder instead. Until finally he collapsed straight to the ground, dead

I could not believe that there was no value for life. That he was just killed out of hatred and strife.

I wiped away the tears as my master walked away. “Get back to work,” he ordered,” don’t just stand here all day.”

And so now i sit, wishing i could flee. Wondering if that whipped man will ever be me.
