Keep Silent a poem by Jennifer jo Fay. A poem about women in abusive relationships and standing strong and leaving them.
Keep Silent
The girl looked in the mirror,
the one that had a shattered crack in it.
Broken only a few days before,
by him.
The girl grabbed her blue comb
and slowly combed through
her straight black hair.
She silently was crying,
her invisible pain was open
and oozing a dangerousness
that threatened to terminate
her days on earth.
Black and blue all over,
she hurt.
Terrible bruises that wouldn’t leave.
Each day, she was constantly reminded
how oh it felt
as his knuckles pounded into her.
She had felt the hard coldness
of the blue tiled floor
against her sunken body.
He hovered over her and threatened.
You better not tell,
or I’ll end you. You filthy wench,
I’ll torture you so. You are but putty
beneath my strong hands.
See what I can do to you,
and you are not to do a thing
or else.
Feel my wrath, my mighty power,
dare to tell the world
and you will see
that headstone I have created
just for you.
The girl looked hard into
the mirror.
Enough, she said,
I will not take anymore.
I’m done, I tell you.
I do not want you anymore.
This girl is done facing your
dirty hands. Leave and never come back.
I want to see your ugly face no more.
