I wrote this just two days before the attack on 9/11.

I had been in the mountain
And alone for some years
I came down to meet with anyone
And found many lands in tears

Something had happened
Changing the course of rivers
So hard to comprehend
Deep within I felt shivers

Then a lady I did see
A Lady at the fountain
Flowing not, the fountain was empty
The Lady wept into the fountain

“Lady why do you weep?”
“I weef for a friend gone.
For she and her children I weep.
The floods have taken them on.”

In the many lands
This is what I had seen
Little or no water in some lands
In others homes washed away I’d seen

I had been dismayed
But within I had felt not the sorrow
In these lands I had not played
I had not lost anything to owe

“She was a beautiful Dragon.
Not the wisest or smartest,
But she was a most caring Dragon.
Now I am put to the test.

For days after the rivers changed
Did I wonder at her cost.
I heard that many dragons had died.
And did not now if she was lost.

Her mate this day did come and speak.
It is sad to know her fate.
Such a great dragon, his heart so weak.
Our tears mingles in this fountain of state.

That morn with his mate did he lay.
That day on a mountain did he ranch
With other Dragons moving dangerous clay
To save farming lad below from avalanche.”

She continued her tale of such deep woe
And I learned of what my soul needed
Her sharing her loss and sorrow
Touched my heart as it was needed

I took the Ladies hand
Looked into her eyes
And together we shed tears for the land
Try together to fill the fountain with our tearing eyes
