Written while seriously ill in the hospital. This poem explores the reasons one might be laid aside or put on the shelf for awhile.
Oft times I get discouraged
And think my life is o’er.
Soon I’ll be abiding
Over on the other shore.
But the move does not come quickly
For I still on earth abide.
My mission here’s not over.
I’ve just been laid aside.
Laid aside for testing.
Laid aside for rest.
Laid aside for some new thought
To make of me Thy best.
Oft times I get quite boastful
And think I’m quite the one.
I boast my gifts and talents
And all that I have done.
For I am self-reliant
And full of self and pride.
I take my eyes off Jesus.
That’s when I’m laid Aside.
The king was very boastful
Of all that he had done.
He gave not the glory
To the source his power had come.
God took away his palace
And He took away his throne.
He wandered in the fields
One year, eating grass alone.
When doors begin closing
And Providence takes o’er,
Look to the Provider.
He’ll see you through the door.
Follow His directions
And listen to His voice.
The sooner you get it right,
The sooner you hear His choice
