I met my fiancee in Wyoming, while I was still living with my ex. This poem is based on our first trip outside of Laramie together, at one of his favorite places to escape about a half hour outside of town.

It’s getting early, you say,
Staring at the orange eastern horizon.
I can only gaze at the sky over town,
At the angry storm clouds wrestling
Until they begin to cry and bleed,
And smile ruefully.

We both know what waits for us.

Hours ago, we lay on the ground,
Unforgiving rocks pinching every nerve.
Who could feel them for the cloud
Cradling us as we cradled each other?

Every winking star gave their coveted blessing,
Showered us with a feeling only true love knows.

Darling, we need to go back.

No.

Please, can we stay in this corner of heaven
Forever?

I don’t want to chance losing this.

Because when I stare into
Your hot chocolate eyes,
I see the future that I crave,
More than nicotine and Cherry Coke.

For you, I gladly give up everything I know
For the promise that I never leave your warm embrace.

Now heaven’s left in the dust behind your Jeep.

The looming storm in town
Fills my head with escalating alarm.

It’s not too late to go back,
I say, an edge of pleading
Slicing through the silence.

You only reply with a warm smile
And a gentle whisper:

Someday.
