The story, in brief: There were two girls who she had not told of Christ because she had thought they would not care to hear it. It was their remark, “You have been here for a week, and you have not said one word about the Lord Jesus Christ,” that gently rebuked her. While they had reminded her of dressy buterflies, she now compared to hungry little lambs!

The Lambs and the Butterflies

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” John 10:28

“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.” 1 Corinthians 15:54

Watching the little lambs in the field,

A certain truth to me unsealed,

As chasing butterflies through the air,

I watched the young lambs playing there.

The truth that came home to me there,

As I watched the butterflies in the air,

Just out of reach of the little lambs,

Was how like these creatures I really am!

For now in this life, I am like a sheep,

Needing His tender care to keep,

As through this world of care I go,

I am a sheep, but the Shepherd knows

How carelessly I’d stray and roam,

From the loving Father, leading me home

And holds me securely in His Hand,

As together we journey to that Land

To that Land where faith will then give way

To blessed sight in that great day,

When God’s dear sheep is released to the sky

Far above the realm of the butterfly!

Have you a pretty, dressy friend,
Who seems to think that’s life’s great end?

While your free heart, so peacefully sings,

They seem tied down to worldly things?

“Don’t take for granted what I am.

Oh, sister, I too am God’s dear lamb”

But help them their ministry realize,

Before they rise as butterflies!
