A resident’s look at Las Vegas.
Arriving by air or land,
forget the mountains and the sand
one is drawn to a skyline
in which God had no hand
The temperature drops just a few degrees
depsite the heat of the constant orange glow
as one heads away from the decrees
of every strip hotel and its Casino
Bathed in sunlight until the fall of night
communities continue their everyday meander
just when you think its lost its might
the strip lights up, for folks to gander
reveling the night away, residents seemingly unaware
until its their time to share
to share in whats fun and wild
yet for us who live here means work, a dollar to raise a child
For they will leave and may come back
beyond the strip is life that does not lack,
the realities of those who just left
returning to their daily deft
From Summerlin to Mountains edge with their funny quirks
the north west, east of fifteen to the lakes
and the traffic halting roadworks
or the ever present cops en route will surely call for brakes
you see like any other place,
there is some of normality away from the race
that’s Las Vegas beyond the strip
