A body lies in the desert sand.

Laying in the Desert Sand

By Brad O’Neill

I found the mangled body of a man,

Laying in the desert sand.

.

His hand clasped rifle he lie face down,

Oddly I heard not a single sound.

.

The wind it ran through his blood soaked hair,

But I felt not the wind nor heard the air.

.

This body was mangled in unnatural ways,

A helicopter crash had taken life away.

.

There were others buried in sand,

But there was something special on this man’s hand.

.

The hand it held a wedding ring,

Signifying a love among other things.

.

The ring it shown in the desert sun,

Tell death did them part, part did come.

.

Another ring a million miles away,

tear drops upon diamond, no words to say.

.

I wish I could find words to comfort her so,

As I loved her in life, but it is time to go.

Brad O’Neill..you gave this deceased soldier life by imagining his thoughts..tranquil imagery used here to soften the image of ‘..This body was mangled in unnatural ways,..’..It’s interesting that the dead soldier is lying in the desert sand..I know this has no relevance whatsoever to the theme of your poem but sand is used to symbolize the marriage of a couple. Until you read something like this..you never really understand the full impact of war.

Very creative. I liked reading it. I actually imagined the scene as I read it and got a sad image of Aafghanistan.
