This is actually a novelette that is written in verse. It tells the story of a very headstrong young woman who runs roughshod over everyone she meets, until one night she has a rather ghostly encounter that changes her perspective and causes her to take stock of her life.
All alone these days she wondered, as she paced about
why wasn’t she happy? She had the trappings and the assets;
the tender love; and the gentle caring her parents gave her.
They said defeat the competition and she’d find true happiness.
From the moment Leslie Ann was able to comprehend,
to her indulgent parents she became an enchanting delight.
They pampered her and taught her to use her feminine wiles;
To come first in all things, then her life would be all right.
Leslie Ann discovered quite early when she was just a tot
That in order to win, she would need to plot and scheme.
In grade school she decided she was not the prettiest girl,
but none had her smarts, her wit, her charm or her means.
All through senior high school Leslie Ann reign supreme,
choosing for her queenly court ten agreeable consorts.
Believing themselves decent, they mocked the lesser ones,
Laughing as they demeaned and denigrated just for sport.
Some of her cohorts got bolder in their quest to please,
for Leslie Ann never grew tired of the hurts she imposed.
Too late her parents tried to control her rebellious behavior
while her teachers all quietly conspired to get her deposed.
Leslie Ann was very clever; a skeleton or two she knew,
which afforded her the freedom to ponder her next exploit.
Deep inside all she wanted was to be love, to be missed,
but behind her back, sneers and jeers would be her only exalts.
While driving under the influence, she wrecked a car or two;
No one dared challenge her and her delinquencies accelerated.
Graduation day finally arrived and the town danced with glee
Leslie Ann was leaving, who cared if her grades were inflated.
Three days after graduation Leslie Ann sadly discovered,
the court she thought adored her didn’t bothered to wish her well.
Alone, packing for college and wiping away hot spilling tears,
she felt the hurt, the betrayal and wished each an interlude in hell.
Resolved, she declared college would be her personal paradise
Why hang with lowly turkeys when she could soar with eagles?
When she flipped her thongs and the English professor winked,
smiled and gave a thumb up, she squared her shoulders regally.
