What do we find when we fail to look inside ourselves?
I stumbled upon a gentleman who’d had a bit of trouble
Come in and have a seat, he spoke
What trouble seems to be following you, I said
Why there’s no trouble he declared
Then why the cubbard with no grub
I don’t understand, he muttered
You have nothing to eat
I have as many beans as my heart can desire
Do you not desire a meal
I do desire just that, but it’s a meal I seek
Then you are not hungry, he said
You are already full, full of what you think is supposed to be
Your hunger is not in the stomach
Your hunger is in the mind
A mind that is not of your own,
But one that has been constructed by material demons
I follow the good life my friend
I have the good life my friend
My home is humble and cubbard not bare
If it’s an abundance you seek, then it is here
Your eyes cannot see it, cause your mind is now blind to it
I see just fine old man,
You are the one that’s blind
You have nothing to offer me
I stop to offer aid, and you offer me nothing
You are poor and I seek more
It is you that is poor and I offer you wealth
What riches do you hold
You are blind to wrinkles, paths of life
You didn’t notice my glasses, which see paths you’ve yet to travel
My rough hands, awards from climbing through life’s journey
Yes, my pockets are empty, if you look there
Yes, I am wealthy, but you fail to look where
Go on your way young stranger,
You have much to learn before becoming a welcomed guest in my home
There’s no fortune you can offer me old man
Misfortune will follow you my son, until you find your way back to me
