“Gravedigger..when you dig my grave could you make it shallow so that I can feel the rain” – Gravedigger (Dave Matthews Band)

Sliding underneath

drowning, dragging on by

letting the water cleanse my empty soul

heavy upon my eyes

like an intruder pressing his thumbs

hard into my sockets

i am breaking away

from the stranger i have become

to all that once knew me

but more so to myself

the beginning of eternal slumber

desolate dreams torn apart

these final acts

will seal my fate

Never again to great vision

to see the streaming sunlight

parading through an open window

the taste of rain sliding in my mouth

i have left no note to show

the words of ending a wretched world

that forever lay bound and hidden

behind my melancholy mask

sick and tired on the consistency of breath

the stress, the self hatred

deepening, grating on old sores

never to be in the body

that had my real name labelled on

living as an animated corpse

a puppet of others guilt

i will no longer settle in this rumble

the broken wreckage of a life

shattered inconsistent hope

i am already gone

I’ve been removed all along

ignoring the natural screams

of a body aching for release

I’m pushing further down

wrapped around the pit of demise

i can feel it strong

death’s arm curling in on me

no thrashing

no broken promises here

an imaginary kneel to the void

remember me how ever you need

to please yourselves

i was never who you saw

my grave will always be engraved

with false inscriptions

the marker

for an unwilling participant

so, scatter me in the memory

of what once never resembled me

I repeat this, you are so hard on yourself, look at the brighter side of life.

i love this song by Dave Matthews Band!

Further you are very profound with your prose/feelings/words … you really pick the vibes ‘especially if you can relate to it’ …. keep such post coming …

This was a good poem. You should read my “Insidious” this remindes me of it in some ways.

We will never be, in total, what others perceive us to be, and there will always be those who do not see us at all. No reason to take yourself out – that is like surrendering all your power to someone else. I will never let anyone other than God have the power of life and death over me.

This poem takes me to a place I do not visit often.

Firstly I don’t view this strictly as you being ‘hard’ upon yourself, nor that you’re merely taking ‘it’ out on yourself. It’s a beautiful piece of writing that is accepting a part of life that most shun, attempt to avoid or wish not even to think about. But on top of that you’re being truthful about your feelings for yourself, and poetry, as I assume we all know, is a cathartic exercise for these types of feelings. And you do it extremely, and elegantly well.

But I find this more of a loathing of others than of the self. The others who you invite to ‘remember me how ever you need to please yourselves i was never who you saw’. It seems that you loathe the world of self-centredness, the uncaring sides of society and people, and it is here I’d suggest self-hatred stems.

Anyway, great work, and I’m glad this was the first piece of yours that I read.

Great poem and a great quote from the Dave Matthews band. The acoustic version of Gravedigger is one of my all time favorite songs; although I am not a big Dave Matthews fan.

I do however have immense respect for his musicianship, sensibilities and convictions.

I too mourn the loss of Slipknot’s bassist untimely death. One of the best modern day art metal bands next to Perfect Circle, Tool, and SOaD.

    Nice poem.
