A poem about leukemia.
All was well, all was great
Until the day I changed state
In our blood, there are cells
Cells who care, and those who listen to warning bells
The cells that care are red,
They never stop working, even when I’m asleep in my bed
As you know, we need oxygen which comes from the air
These caring cells, transport the oxygen throughout our body without a fare
Those who stand guard are white
In my blood, they act as a knight
These knights try to win every fight
Against those who cause a freight
Doctors do not yet know how I got this,
But I heard it can be from genetics
I also heard that my experience with high levels of radiation,
May have caused this frustration
I sometimes feel tired and weak,
And I see random bruises on my cheek
I lose my appetite,
Leaving me weighing like a kite
At times at night, when I’m sleeping,
I feel my body sweating
I can feel it in my bones
I can hear my joint’s groans
There must be something wrong with my bone marrow
It feels like I have been shot with an arrow
I don’t know how they will diagnose me
Cytogenetics is one of the many
They take some blood they take a lymph node
They see if there is damage done to my DNA code
They now must stick a needle inside me
This is how they start chemotherapy
Cancer cells try to reproduce, try to grow
They said this will destroy them, that’s all I know
My body grows too weak
It now is such a struggle just to speak
As I grow older my bones begin to weaken
And my body begins to be shaken
I am not as strong as I was before
So now I can’t dance on the dance floor.
I easily get bruises
So I get the blues
I easily get tired
So it is harder to get hired
The kids at school make fun of me
So I hide behind the tree
