A poem about childhood memories…
Image via Wikipedia
I stumble upon this cardboard box,
A hidden tomb for my old skates!
I lift the lid and here they are,
Scuffed, unlaced, tattered and worn,
A pair only my memories can adorn.
I spin the wheels round and round,
And so here go my thoughts,
Rolling, rolling, and reflecting,
Turning back to the happy years,
When wheel-to-ground sounds filled my ears.
I remember the bumpy road beneath my feet,
And the vibrations that seemed to linger,
Long after the skates were put away!
I loved the rhythm of my legs that swayed,
And all the many days I played.
The friends I made were solid and true,
Willing to skate into exhaustion,
And then any shady tree would do.
My first crush would even skate beside me,
Back when life was simple, and time was free.
This vehicle carried me through the seasons.
In the cooler months, the wind was in my hair.
In the summer, I would melt into these skates!
I got a little fancy with style and speed,
I loved to follow and loved to lead.
A smile comes over me now,
As I reminisce to that skating time,
Symbolic of youth, innocence, and fun.
An entity I’m so blessed to know.
Now, back on the shelf my memories must go.
I realize as I turn from the box,
That a little girl’s life has skated by,
But also comes a sense of joy,
For as they lie with their frayed laces,
These old skates still take me places… =)
