Lighting has a purpose in film, video, and TV.

We’re all familiar with lighting

It sets the mood

Establishes the locale

Shapes the environment

Gives definition

And serves as an enhancement

- – -

Lighting could be natural

Like the sun, moon

And stars

Or artificial as key, back

And side lights

That are known

In the video business

As triangular lighting

- – -

To accomplish lighting goals

We have to consider the following lights

A Fresnel that allows for an even

And directional light beam

The scoop that gives off diffused light

A fill light that has a softening

And diffused effect

That’s often made

With an incandescent bulb

- – -

Like the spot light

The ellipsoidal spot casts a concentrated

Beam that could produce different shapes

And patterns on a screen

By inserting a cucalorous

Or cookie as it’s called

- – -

A strip or eye light makes

It possible for light to be thrown

On a backdrop

Or unto another part of a set

- – -

A lighting meter is used

To measure light’s intensity

Most light meters register the light

Falling on the meter in foot-candles

The measurement as it falls

On the subject is called

An incident reading

- – -

Light that’s measured as it’s reflected

From the subject

Is called a reflected reading

- – -

All these procedures are called for

So that a production staff

Can accomplish the most flattering

Images of their show
