Foreign Punjabi worker has worked in Germany for a number of years. When he arrived he was young. He had hoped to return to Punjab. However, this hope has been desperately shattered. He is no longer young and has been trying to survive in the Germany as best as he can. No matter what he does, he faces there is are bounds and limits beyond which he is not allowed. These verses are his struggle to understand how fellow humans cut off others by abrupt inconsiderate negative gestures both physical and unspoken.
This far and no further,
Palm raised and digits pointin’,
That side of me is you,
Here this be me and mine,
This far and no further.
This far and no further,
Palm risk not a thought,
That issues have been settled,
Here your want and my need,
This far and no further.
This far and no further,
Palm shows limits allowed,
That is disallowed is you,
Here it is us and them and me not you,
This far and no further.
This far and no further,
Palm accepts no Q&As’,
That without comment,
Here you must appreciate,
This far and no further.
This far and no further,
Palm marks public and private,
That it is closed to scrutiny,
Here I am secure you go away,
This far and no further.
This far and no further,
Palm raised and digits pointin’,
That side of me is you,
Here this be me and mine,
This far and no further.
