While on holiday recently it was amazing to see people sunbathing until they were bright red.

Image via Wikipedia

There’s a couple on the beach

Who come from far away.

They spend all their time on sun beds

Throughout each sun drenched day.

With complexions red as lobsters

As they’re served from the pot

It’s as if they haven’t learnt

That the sun is rather hot.

Come nightfall they will feel it

As they toss and turn in bed,

And their skin is burning fiercely

And they’ve sunstroke on their heads.

Oh why have they not learned,

After all the fuss that’s made,

That it’s really far more sensible

When it’s hot to sit in shade?

Overexposure to sunlight is not good for health but may harm one’s health. liked it.

  • Jimmy Shilaho on Aug 19, 2010

What a title, I actually thought of actual lobsters. Excessive sunlight is damaging.

  • Val Mills on Aug 19, 2010

I’m still laughing, Christine! While across the Tasman in Sydney a year or so ago, we bought and ate lobsters and chips and sat on Bondi Beach eating them. That would be unaffordable here in NZ. Your title certainly catches attention.

  • Likha on Aug 19, 2010

This is amusing. We don’t see a lot of lobsters on the beach here given our brown complexion. We turn tan straightaway. I love your personal accounts.

  • dak on Aug 19, 2010

    nicely written.

  • webseowriters on Aug 19, 2010

    Thanks for wonderful share

  • Starpisces on Aug 19, 2010

haha, me too, thought I will see picture of lobsters here.
Oh, must protect the skin, last time I always wanted to be tanned because I was originally fair in complexion, and I always don’t like to be fair and tried to go under the sun as much as I can, now I avoid, and even if I go swimming pool, will apply sun block. However, I don’t have the habit of using umbrella or wearing hat on a sunny day. I don’t mind getting contact with the sun but not like the lobster picture here, haha.

    Wonderful share. .

  • ashucharu on Aug 19, 2010

well-written….when i started readin i thought that people were bitten by lobsters…hehehe….but true people get burnt in the UV rays. but i have heard that most people who live in the colder region do not get to see the sun much… and when they do they have no choice but to enjoy the warmth….
i live on an island and surrounded by beaches. But i never prefer to go there in the heat and under the sun..
evenings are good to spend at the beach….

I’m sure they know it now. Hard head, soft behind.

Too much sun exposure leads to cancer. I guess there are still too many ignorant people in this world. And yes, it does hurt a lot.

  • krrymarie on Aug 19, 2010

haha! I thought this was going to be about a lobster and a pot or something.
lovely poem and yes I agree some people are still so silly when it comes to sun bathing!

  • Ramalingam on Aug 19, 2010

Though we in India are not used to such sun baths,We have got a nice exposure about sun baths through your poem. Thanks for sharing.

  • ashan1614 on Aug 19, 2010

Your poem is cute and funny – I have seen some lobsters myself. But it brings to light a serious health issue. Skin cancer can be a killer. Unfortunately, there are still people who will chance it for what they think is attractive/beautiful (a nice tan). Hope they will learn before it’s too late.

Your poems always give me a good read. Thank you.

  • T. S. Lewis on Aug 19, 2010

Indeed. The shade is such a comfortable place to relax when the sun is blazing.

Christine, years ago when we went to the lake we did the same thing every year. it is absolutely painful. I don’t do it anymore.

CR…great poem with some valuable advice. I have been burned to a crisp when I spent one sunny day paddling around a lake in southern British Columbia and this was in the days before the rays of the sun turned out to be unrelenting. I also saw someone suffering from water blisters from being out in the Hawaiin sun for too long…not a pretty sight. I guess we are ll very slow learners…hope people follow your advice and stay in the shade during the heat of the day…of course I voted…Thanks.

Your comparison on lobsters and sunbathing is too good. I thought this was something to do with lobsters when I saw the title.

  • papaleng on Aug 20, 2010

A very catchy title. Thought it was a recipe..lol. Nevertheless, you have shared your observation in such a very lovely poem.

Or they learn to wear a good sunscreen and reapply throughout the day. Living in Florida, it didn’t take me long to learn that lesson. I haven’t had a burn in years and years. Loved your poem.

  • Brewed Coffee on Aug 20, 2010

I was thinking of the real lobsters when I read the title hahah! Ouch ouch that must really hurt a lot. You are right, best to stay in the shade. Lovely poem

Thank you everyone for your interesting comments. I didn’t realise that lobsters on the beach could be so misunderstood.

I loved your poem. It really is a shame that people insist on baking in the sun when they know how dangerous it is to do that. I always head for the shade whenever it is bright outside.

Nice one Christine, some fools just don’t learn, getting caught by accident, is one thing… cooking your self another cheers.

This is funny, though you do have to be careful in the sun.

  • mysocalledlife on Sep 4, 2010

when i saw the title, i was thinking right away of lobsters as food! hahaha… oh but it’s human lobster! nice

  • wonder on Sep 13, 2010

Oh! what a comparison, this was a great read. It is true, one should be satisfied with the natural tone.

  • Lady Sunshine on Sep 19, 2010
