An imagery-filled poem of unfulfilled dreams and the loss of self inherent in adherence to societal pressures.
This is the night
I lose myself
Turn on the closet light
Leave my dreams on the shelf
Flip the switch and close the door
A quick pause as I say goodbye
No time left for any more
Walk outside to a starless sky
Clouds obscure my remaining thoughts
Loss makes my head and heart ache
Insides tied in complex knots
I wish I could now awake
Find things are not as they seem
Perhaps a nightmare, I posit
But this cannot be a dream
I left them in the closet
So I take off down the street
Trees flash by on either side
Find where road and river meet
Bridge shadows where I can hide
Sit and watch the current flow
Consider what life meant to me
Hope that I will come to know
Home is where my heart should be
