Married for such a long time…

His pale hands were chalky,
with that lack of life,
but the color briefly returned,
when he was around his wife,
married and together for over sixty years,
she loved him as she fought back the tears,
death approached,
it broke his sickly heart,
but he knew that it’ll take death,
to break them apart,
he offered no struggle,
considering his lack of strength,
she was not surprised she knew him that well,
if he had the strength he’d fight and that she could tell.
His hands tingling cold,
her eyes sadly red,
he reached over head,
to slip an arm around her back,
the desire to rush forward,
almost crushed his lungs,
he kissed her lips,
she closed her eyes,
young again briefly,
and the memories were so alive,
he was a good husband,
and the Lord knows he tried,
he had so many sicknesses and symptoms,
but on that day,
she was the one who died.

OMG surprise ending to me. Sorry I haven’t been around ~ really busy time but I’ll be back for good soon. But I had to take a minute or two to view some of you entries since it’s been so long. In any event I see your mind still works in that mysterious way. A sad, touching read. Thanks for the share! I enjoyed it. :)

Another true life drama captured in detailed poetic lines. Well done, Frank.

Another well captured life drama, Frank. I thought you will be singing Matt Monro’s song with the same title, then I realize Triond isn’t Youtube, lol.

This is an excellent and well-written poem. Sixty years is sure a long time. You don\\\’t see this too often these days. True love and devotion: great title. this is very sad but my sixth sense tells me that he would have preferred to die first.

“1: I told you I would always come for you. Why didn’t you wait for me? 2: Well, you were dead 1: But death cannot stop true love…All it can do is delay it for a while.” The Princess Bride.

I came back to this poem. Although it has a sad ending, it is a perfect example of true love. And like you pointed out, true love and devotion go hand in hand. Good job.

I broke down and cried, then reread this fine art of love..
It is so sad that we are born to die, leaving ones to pine.
