Love isn’t always what we expect.

Love is different than I thought it would be.
I thought it would be a grandiose aura,
around myself and my love
that no one could deny was the real thing.
I thought that the passion would be undeniable,
sending an arc of lightning sparks across a crowded room.
I thought when we came together,
it would be waves crashing upon the shore,
bursts of light,
rainbows of color,
and rolling thunder.
What I’ve found
is that love is a quiet acceptance,
a meeting of souls,
a joining of hearts,
a sharing of dreams,
that is as soft as a whisper
and as pure as the driven snow.
Passion does not spark or roll or burst or shine
for us,
but is steady and blooming like the dawn,
calm like a tranquil lake,
free like a bird on the wind.
When we come together,
it is true intimacy,
love, and trust.
Love is different than I thought it would be.
I am quietly sure that he loves me.
I feel safe and cherished every day.
I dream of a future and babies to bounce on our knees.
I’m glad that love is different than I thought it would be.

Dear Jaylen- I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your praise. I hope that I can continue to live up to your expectations!

Dear Kelin Hurt- I’m glad that you found your own meaning and emotion within the poem. I wrote it as an acceptance of what love turned out to be for me, but rereading it, I can see exactly what you mean.

Dear Jacin- Thank you so much for you kind words. I appreciate your feedback.

Dear LJ Reeves- I’m so glad that you think so! That is exactly how I intended this piece to turn out, and I’m so glad that someone else has been thinking something similar.

This is by far one of my favorite poems I’ve read from this site in awhile. The flow is perfect – soft, enchanting, soothing – like a gentle caress. The words, the images, the way it’s skillfully put together, masterful.

    I especially love:

    love is a quiet acceptance,
    a meeting of souls,
    a joining of hearts,
    a sharing of dreams,
that is as soft as a whisper
and as pure as the driven snow.

    Simply a gifted SPLENDOR!!*

    Blessings.

    Sincerely,

    -Liane Schmidt.

You are right and I’ve never thought to see love in this way. True, I want the burst of color and rolling thunder but the meeting of souls and joining of hearts sounds so much more romantic.

    Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much! It’s nice to find someone who understands the feelings behind my words.

    Hi, Eva, how are you?
I will have to agree with your perception. I really like this free verse, it flows and has a good theme, and sheer and appropriate images.
I happen to think that love is a little bit more than just feeling. I happen to think that love is an action that we choose to follow, a path we choose to take. When we stand at the crossroads of so many points in our lives, we show love by choosing the proper way, the supreme way that love would have us choose. Don’t get me wrong, passion has it’s place, but that’s where it only begins, don’t you agree? Thanks for sharing, and have a great day.
